Massachusetts Waste Ban on mattresses and textiles
Effective November 1, 2022, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP) implemented a waste ban on mattresses and textiles (such as clothing or linens). These materials will no longer be allowed to be thrown away in your household or business trash. Mattresses (including box springs) and textiles will now need to be recycled* or donated for reuse.
Since the State's waste ban restricts trash haulers from picking these items up curbside, you will likely find your trash hauler is unable to pick up these items.
*Please note: "Recycled" does not mean placing your textiles in the blue recycling bin you currently have and use for glass jars, paper, etc. Recycling for these items is different. Keep reading below for textiles and mattress recycling options.
HOW TO RecyclE MATTRESSES AND TEXTILES
Due to the State’s waste ban, trash haulers are not permitted to collect mattresses or textiles at the curb. As a result, residents are responsible for arranging proper recycling or donation for these items.
Similar to how the Town handles trash, we do not currently offer a program for residents to drop off mattresses or textiles, and we do not have a contract with a specific vendor for these items. This allows residents the flexibility to choose a recycling or donation option that works best for them.
Here are a few options:
-
Donate textiles in good condition to a local thrift store and/or organization. Some may even provide pick up services. To find an organization near you, try a Google search for "local donation centers".
-
For textiles that are unable to be donated (i.e. items in poor condition such as stained or otherwise soiled clothing, underwear, unmatched socks, etc.) requires recycling. Options for recycling include Bay State Textile collection bins. To find a collection bin near you, visit their website.
